What causes a car to overheat?

I have 2006 Chevy Equinox. 100K miles on it AWD. All the hoses and belts have been replaced. Today I was in bumper to bumper traffic when I noticed the car overheating. The fan is working ok. This is the first time this has ever happened before. What could be the cause for overheating?
