Are laws that address gay people applicable across the nationally?

More specifically, are laws addressing sodomy, gay marriage, same parenting/adoption made to be followed by the nation or does each law vary from state to state? If i am right (which I am not sure of, which is why I am asking) they vary from state to state. Clarification would be greatly appreciated!
